Kangen Water Health Benefits
Kangen water ionizers are in-home medical devices. The company was funded in Japan by Mr. Hironari Oshiro in 1974. The word Kangen means "return to origin" in Japanese. Machines are found in hundreds of hospitals in Japan, including Kyowa Hospital, Kitari Institute Medical Center, Showa University Hospital, Meiseki Hospital, Nara College of Medicine Hospital, Iida Hospital, Tokyo Women’s College of Medicine Hospital, Hanabatake Hospital, and many more. Over 6,500 doctors have tested Enagic’s Kangen Water life science devices in clinical applications with their patients.
Alkaline water containing molecular hydrogen is produced at the negative electrode (cathode). There are many names given to this water including: alkaline water, ionized water, alkali ion water, cathodic water, electrolyzed reduced water (ERW), and more.
Electrolyzed reduced water (ERW) is the most common term in the scientific literature. It is called “electrolyzed” because the water has undergone electrolysis and is called “reduced” because the water at the cathode has been reduced to hydrogen gas and hydroxides. This alkaline water has reductive characteristics due to the presence of dissolved hydrogen gas.
Some of the biggest benefits of this water is the molecular hydrogen, antioxidants, anti inflammatory properties, and it's negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) between -100 mV to-700 mV.

Kangen water is one of the higest sources of antioxidants
What are antioxidants? Let's start with oxidation. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals, thereby leading to chain reactions that may damage the cells of organisms, and lead to aging. Think about when you bite into an apple, then leave it out for 10 minutes. It turns brown and softens very fast. The same thing happens with rust on iron when it is exposed to oxygen and moisture. This is the process of oxidation, and the same concept goes with our bodies aging.
So what are free radicals? Put simply, a healthy human cell has a negative and a positive charge (this as the harmonious balance of your cell). When the cell becomes unhealthy (due to oxidative stress), it looses it’s negative charge and becomes a free radical, and too many of these can lead to disease. Too many free radicals will lead to oxidative stress, which is linked to aging and a host of diseases. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are a type of free radical that contains oxygen. A build up of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells may cause damage to DNA, RNA, and proteins, and may cause cell death. Numerous articles discuss the negative consequences of ROS and their implications on virtually every disease: Immune disorders, such as diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation, and other fatal diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease as well as aging.
Antioxidants give their food/water/herbs a NEGATIVE electrical charge. These charges go into the body, and pair up with free radicals (which are positively charged), and NEUTRALIZE them. They are then able to be flushed out of our bodies. Antioxidants protect our cells from oxidative stress, and promote detoxification. So we want to get as many antioxidants as possible. Some foods high in antioxidants are blueberries, broccoli, spinach, oranges, garlic, green tea, bananas, acai berries. One glass of Kangen water is equal (in antioxidants) to 5 pounds of blueberries or 12 pounds of broccoli!!

Negative Oxidation-reduction Potential (ORP)
A negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP or redox potential) reading indicates that a substance is a reducing agent. This is a measure of how well the water can reduce free radicals and protect against oxidative damage to cells. A liquid can either be positively charged (oxidizing) or negatively charged (reducing). Negatively charged water gives off electrons, neutralizing free radicals. This can prevent and even reverse cellular and tissue damage due to oxidative stress. The lower the reading, the more anti-oxidizing it is. As such, a substance with an ORP reading of -400 mV is 4 times more anti-oxidizing than a substance with an ORP reading of -100 mV. When the ORP value is high, there is lots of oxygen present in the water. Normal tap water, bottled water, and rain water have a positive ORP generally between 200 to 400 mV, and even as high as 500 to 600 mV depending on location.

Benefits of Molecular Hydrogen
Molecular hydrogen is the smallest molecule in the world, but don’t let its size fool you, molecular hydrogen (H2) has been studied as one of the most potent antioxidants available to us. Molecular hydrogen is able to both cross the blood-brain barrier and diffuse through cell membranes to influence the cytosol (fluid within cells), mitochondria (cell's energy powerhouse) and nucleus (“brain” of cells). This means we are able to feel true hydration as a result of drinking hydrogen-rich water because it rapidly penetrates bio-membranes and reaches sub-cellular compartments where it can exert its therapeutic benefits. It acts as an antioxidant and is thought to protect cells from oxidative stress-related damage. Most pesticides are oil based. They have to be pretty hardy or else they would just wash off anytime it rains. That means they also won't wash off with normal tap water.

What is Electrolysis?
The K8 works through the process of electrolysis which is similar to the water being struck by lightning. Electricity is used to split molecules that normally are stable and wouldn’t split on their own without the electricity being applied. The water (H2O) is split into Hydrogen gas (H2), Hydrogen ions (H+), and Hydroxyl ions (OH-). The cathode breaks water up into hydrogen and hydroxyl. The hydroxyl (OH-) goes to the anode, where it is dispensed with the acidic water. This is because it is negatively charged. The hydrogen and positively charged minerals are dispensed with the Kangen water. The water is called “reduced” because the water at the cathode has been reduced to hydrogen gas and hydroxides. This alkaline water has reductive characteristics due to the presence of dissolved hydrogen gas.
In order to go through electrolysis, water must contain certain minerals, or electrolytes. Pure water with absolutely nothing (no minerals) in it is a very poor conductor of electricity and therefore it is not possible to ionize water significantly enough to change the pH or hydrogen content. These minerals, referred to as electrolytes, include: sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, sulfate, phosphate, magnesium.
